The Special Report on Emissions Scenarios was a report, prepared for the IPCC TAR [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report], on future emission scenarios to be used for driving global circulation models to develop climate change scenarios. It was used to replace the IS92 scenarios used for the SAR [Second Assessment Report].

Dans le cadre du troisième rapport d'évaluation, le GIEC [Groupe d'experts intergouvernemental sur l'évolution du climat] a développé 40 scénarios alternatifs sur la base de quatre tendances possibles au cours du prochain siècle. Ces scénarios prennent comme hypothèse différentes combinaisons de développement démographique, économique et sociétal, technologique et de type de coopération internationale. Le rapport spécial sur les scénarios d'émission (SRES) est un travail d'ensemble sur lequel s'appuieront les prospectives climatiques dans le futur. Les scénarios pris en compte par le SRES vont d'une croissance économique marquée dans le cadre d'une coopération internationale limitée et de quelques mesures de protection environnementales existantes à un développement «vert» impliquant une coopération internationale forte.
